Het Noorden, founded by a number of Groningen shipowners in the year 1907, was a mutual insurer that in the beginning focused mainly on coasters.
People insured themselves to take care of the consequences of accidents and illness of crew members on board the ship. It also covered the medical expenses of seafarers in the Netherlands.

During the war years, many smaller coasters took their merchant ships to inland waterways. They remained insured with Het Noorden for medical expenses. The result was that Het Noorden gradually had a group of insured for whom this mutual was not really intended.
